Before leaving home
- Confirm the car is available and agree a viewing time at the dealer’s showroom.
- Ask for the complete price, including any transfer, insurance or other charges.
- Ask which service records are available and what repair, accident or repaint history is known.
Look beyond the paint
View the car in daylight. Look over the tyres, cabin, lights and visible damage, and compare the car with the listing photographs. Ask to hear the engine start from cold and pay attention to unusual noises, smoke or warning lights.
An independent mechanic’s inspection can help you assess engine, transmission and structural condition. Photographs and a business badge cannot establish these by themselves.
Check the records
Compare the vehicle and seller’s records, including the registration certificate, ownership details, insurance and any outstanding loan or hypothecation. Ask how ownership transfer will be completed. Record anything still unresolved before agreeing payment.
Drive, discuss and decide
Arrange a test drive with the dealer and follow their licence and safety requirements. Check comfort, steering, braking and the equipment important to you. Obtain the final price, promised repairs and any warranty or cancellation terms in writing.
If a listing appears misleading, report it to Carkot.
